In 2005, I purchased property on Kiger Island and established a small blueberry farm. I grow the berries in a sustainable farming practice, minimizing any chemicals. Due to the small size of the farm, all fruit is hand picked and hand packed. Although this is labor intensive, I'm able to pick the fruit when it's perfectly ripe and deliver it within 24 hours from the field.
The fruit is never sprayed, but it is grown under the open sky, so I recommend washing all berries before eating!
This year I'm going full tilt into U-Pick. I've been open all of July and have had a two evening picks. The pickers have been so great. It's fun to have Gramma come along as well as babies in strollers or backpacks. I also welcome customers coming to the farm for picked fruit. No appointment is necessary but call 541-752-0787 to get the latest update.
The Berries
I grow four varieties of Northern Highbush Blueberries, bred to produce fruit throughout the summer season. The first of the season starts with Dukes, quickly followed by Bluecrop. The late variety is Elliott. I also have some Legacy and Liberty. There are over 10,000 plants in the 6 1/2 acres. The plants are still young but are fully productive and professionally pruned. I am more than happy to talk with you about your home garden blueberry plants and hope to see you on the farm.
Each of these berries has a unique flavor, but all are delicious, ample sized, and perfect for the fresh market.
